Expanding ETED's fiber-optic infrastructure

We are expanding the fiber-optic infrastructure of the Dominican Electricity Transmission Company (ETED). Using Nokia DWDM technology, we will build and equip 23 new nodes across the country, creating a high-capacity transport network with 100 Gbps channels. As the first project of this scale to reach the most remote communities, it directly helps close the Dominican Republic's digital divide.
The challenge
The Dominican Electricity Transmission Company (ETED) wanted to expand its fiber-optic infrastructure to bring high-capacity transport to the whole country, including the most remote communities. In the Dominican Republic, extending the network to those areas is a direct step toward closing the digital divide. Bringing high-capacity transport to places far from urban centers involves technical and logistical challenges, because the network has to be built and equipped in spots where prior infrastructure is scarce or nonexistent.
The solution
We are expanding ETED's fiber-optic infrastructure with Nokia DWDM technology. The project includes building and equipping 23 new nodes across the country, which make up a high-capacity transport network with 100 Gbps channels. The rollout is carried out in a consortium with Sadotel. DWDM technology makes it possible to multiply the capacity of the existing fiber by carrying several channels at once, which makes the investment in infrastructure more efficient.
The impact
It is the first project of this scale to reach the Dominican Republic's most remote communities, so it contributes directly to universal internet access. The new transport capacity enables more applications and new businesses on top of the energy transmission infrastructure. By using the electricity transmitter's network to deploy fiber, the project brings high-capacity connectivity to areas that would hardly reach it through traditional means.
