We are transforming how electricity use is measured in every home in Uruguay

We are working with UTE, Uruguay's electricity distributor, to install nearly 1.8 million smart meters across the country. With this technology, people can save money by planning their electricity use around time-of-day pricing. It also helps UTE save on energy generation and distribution by smoothing demand peaks.

The challenge

UTE, Uruguay's electricity distributor, set out to change how consumption is measured in every home in the country. Moving from traditional metering to a nationwide advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is a project of enormous logistical and technical scope, involving nearly 1.8 million meters. It is not just about replacing equipment: the meters have to be integrated with the utility's systems, communication with each point has to be sustained, and it has to be done gradually across the whole territory.

The solution

We worked with UTE on the AMI project, handling the supply, implementation, and support of smart meters across the country. The technology lets people plan their consumption around time-of-day pricing and save, and it lets UTE smooth demand peaks, with the resulting savings in energy generation and distribution. Smart meters also enable remote readings and operations, which cuts home visits and shortens the time it takes to handle incidents.

The impact

It is the most advanced end-to-end smart-metering rollout in the region. According to public information, UTE reached 1.7 million homes with smart meters under the plan, a milestone that positions Uruguay as a regional reference in this technology. Smart metering reshapes the relationship between the utility and every home: consumption information becomes more accurate and timely, which opens the door to new services and to more efficient management of the electricity network.
