We rebuilt the structured cabling in Santander's corporate building with green materials to help lower its carbon footprint. The infrastructure captures CO² from the environment. The green cable also produces less smoke in the event of a fire and releases no toxic gases, protecting people's health in those situations.

The challenge

Santander wanted to reduce its corporate building's carbon footprint without giving up network performance. Structured cabling is one of the least visible parts of a building, yet it runs through every floor and shapes both the efficiency of communications and how materials behave in a fire. Reworking that infrastructure in a building that is in use means doing it without stopping the bank's daily operation. The goal was to renew the cabling with environmental and safety criteria, and to leave it aligned with the organization's sustainability commitments.

The solution

We rebuilt the building's structured cabling with green materials. These materials capture CO2 from the environment and, in the event of a fire, produce less smoke and release no toxic gases, two properties that lower the risk to people during an evacuation. The work kept the bank's communications running while the infrastructure was replaced with a version that has a lower environmental impact and behaves better under fire. It was planned in stages so work areas stayed connected throughout the changeover.

The impact

Santander added a network infrastructure to its corporate building that lines up with its sustainability goals. The change helps lower the building's carbon footprint and, at the same time, protects the health of the people who work there in an emergency. Because it is a base layer of the building, the improvement stays with the organization for the whole life cycle of the installation, without depending on additional day-to-day actions.
